When are King George Whiting biting in Port Phillip Bay?
You can catch KGW in Port Phillip Bay year-round, but the bite gets noticeably better as the water warms — September through April are the strongest months. Mid-summer (Dec–Feb) is the textbook peak; cold-water months (Jul–Aug) the fish are still there but slower and more spread out.
Best whiting banks and grounds
Port Phillip Bay is a whiting bay. The good news is they're not hidden — they hold on the obvious weed edges. The honest news is the productive bank moves with weed health, water temp and fishing pressure, so yesterday's hot bank can be empty today.
| Area | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rye Bank | Classic mid-summer KGW, 4–7 m | Well known, can get crowded; wind protected from south |
| Mt Martha / Safety Beach | Mid-bay, easy access from Martha Cove | Patchy weed/sand, drift between |
| Mornington flats | Spring–summer, 5–8 m | Boat ramp 5 minutes away |
| Mordialloc / Carrum | Northern bay shore, 4–6 m | Reliable for kids' sessions |
| Sorrento & Blairgowrie | Southern bay, often biggest fish | Watch the rip currents |
| St Leonards / Indented Head | Western shore, mid-summer hot | Bellarine ramp access |
Reading the chart for whiting
Whiting feed on the edge between weed and sand. They're not in the middle of the weed; they're not in the middle of the sand. They're on the seam. A bathymetry + bottom-type chart shows you these seams from your kitchen the night before. We built that into BayCast for both bays — the alternative is wasting half a session looking.
Rig and tackle
- Rod: 6'6"–7' light spin, 2–4 kg.
- Reel: 2500-size, 6 lb braid + 8 lb fluorocarbon leader.
- Rig: Standard paternoster, two-hook, dropper loops 30 cm and 50 cm above sinker. Hook size 4 long-shank.
- Sinker: Size 1 or 2 ball, just enough to hold bottom. Lighter is always better — KGW are leader-shy when it's blowing.
Bait
- Pipis — number one. Fresh from a beach walk, or from BCF or Anaconda.
- Squid strips — durable, cheap, a fall-back when pipis aren't there.
- Bass yabbies / mussels — premium baits, often outfish everything else when whiting are picky.
- Silver whiting fillet — for the bigger horse whiting (40 cm+).
Tide and timing
The bay isn't strongly tidal but the few-hour window around tide change is when most of our serious whiting bites happen. Plan your session so dawn or dusk overlaps with a tide change for the best odds.
Bag limit (Victoria)
Bag limit: 20 KGW per angler per day, minimum size 27 cm. Combined daily limit applies if you're also keeping other whiting species. Check the VFA for current rules.
